A southern European avant-gardist to discover
The Ernst Barlach Haus presents a pioneer of modern Portuguese painting: Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887–1918). Celebrated in his home country, he has been little recognised until now outside Portugal, although during his lifetime he was much admired by artists, critics and collectors in Europe and America.

The loans come from the collection of the prestigious Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian – Centro de Arte Moderna in Lisbon, where Cardoso’s work has recently been catalogued
The exhibition is accompanied by the first German-language publication on Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. (160 pages, 25 euros).
