‘Art that concerns me’
– was how the founder of our museum, Hermann F. Reemtsma, characterised the work of Ernst Barlach. And we too wish to devise our exhibition programme in this spirit: exiting, inspiring, relevant.
We set an unusual agenda in concentrated presentations of 20th-century and present-day artists: we examine new aspect of classical modernism, showcase art in and from Hamburg, present private collections or introduce contemporary forms of sculpture. Our particular speciality is exhibitions of artists whose significance is still underappreciated – small but select projects for explorers, aficionados, seekers and finders.
All our exhibitions arise from an interaction with our Barlach collection, from which they bring out new facets in specially conceived tours. So you can expect to see familiar works in unusual contexts.
You can find out which Barlach works are currently on show under Barlach On the Move, where you can also see which pieces are on loan to exhibitions elsewhere.
